Authors and translators in dialogue: Sandra Hoffmann and Katy Derbyshire

V&Q publishes Sandra Hoffmann: PAULA, tr. Katy Derbyshire
Winner of the 2018 Hans Fallada Prize

An autofictional account of the author’s relationship with her grandmother, who refused to reveal the father of her child born in late 1946. Hoffmann confronts the silence passed down the generations and imagines who her grandfather might have been. She details her Catholic upbringing in rural 1970s Swabia, her unresolved questions about her own appearance and identity, and her eventual rebellion.
