Edden-book

ITSEE is delighted to announce the publication of a new edition in the Middle English Texts series by Dr Valerie Edden.

Dr Edden, formerly of the Department of English at the University of Birmingham, has been an Honorary Fellow of ITSEE since its inception in 2005. In recent years, she has been working on an edition of an early English translation of the history of the Carmelite Order, found in a single manuscript (London, Lambeth Palace Library, MS 192). Entitled Þe Instytucyonys and Specyal Dedys of Relygyows Carmelitys, the fifteenth-century translation into Middle English by Thomas Scrope offers an important source for the spiritual life of late medieval East Anglia.

The edition has now been published as volume 54 in the Middle English Texts series by Winter in Heidelberg. The full bibliographic citation is: Valerie Edden, ed., Þe Instytucyonys and Specyal Dedys of Relygyows Carmelitys (MET 54). Heidelberg: Winter, 2016; ISBN 978-3-8253-6709-1. It includes a full introduction, transcription, commentary and glossary. In her acknowledgements, Dr Edden expresses her gratitude to Professor David Parker and other members of ITSEE for their support, encouragement and interest in the volume. In particular, Dr Hugh Houghton and Dr Rosalind MacLachlan offered specialist advice on the Latin text.

Congratulations to Dr Edden on the appearance of this edition, making a fascinating text available to a new readership!
