Mental Health Humanities

Taking ‘the medical’ beyond clinical encounters, Mental Health Humanities at Birmingham is a network of academics from across the University seeking nuanced and urgent understandings of health and illness. Our aim is to foster transdisciplinary and cross-sectoral entanglements and further the integration of the medical humanities into mental healthcare and medical education.

Our four current areas of interest:

  • narratives, stories, and autobiography
  • lived experiences, power, othered identities and pathologisation
  • affect, empathy, the body
  • teaching, training, and developing clinicians, researchers and academics
