Bladder Cancer Prognosis Programme (BCPP)

The Programme consists of a follow-up study of bladder cancer patients recruited via 16 urology centres in the West Midlands and a bladder cancer Biobank.

About the BCCP
About the BCCP
The Bladder Cancer Prognosis Programme (BCPP) recruited over 1300 bladder cancer patients between 2005 and 2011. The biospecimen collection, comprising fresh-frozen bladder cancer tissues as well as blood and urine, has grown to be one of the world’s largest and most detailed providing a unique resource for a wide array of bladder cancer studies. Each biological sample is linked to over one thousand variables containing clinical, epidemiological and pathological data. All samples have also been linked to follow up data on recurrence and progression.
The following sub-projects have been delivered using BCPP data or samples
- Assessing the effect of lifestyle factors on bladder cancer pathology and on the recurrence and progression of this disease.
- The quality of life of bladder cancer patients
- A Randomized Clinical Trial to assess the effect of selenium and vitamin E supplementation on the risk of recurrence and progression in patients with bladder cancer
- The development of a prediction model for recurrence and progression of bladder cancer using proteomic, genomic and epigenomic biomarker panels
- The development of a non-invasive (urine) test for the diagnosis and risk stratification of bladder cancer
Project objectives
Project objectives
Our objectives are as follows:
- To assess the effect of lifestyle factors (such as smoking, dietary habits, fluid intake and environmental exposures) on the recurrence and progression of bladder cancer.
- To study health related quality of life and its association with recurrence and progression of bladder cancer.
- To establish a bladder cancer biospecimen collection (that will comprise blood, urine, and bladder tissue).
- To study the predictive effect of molecular markers on the recurrence and progression of bladder cancer.
- To investigate whether selenium and/or vitamin E supplementation reduces the risk of recurrence and progression in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
Accrual data
Accrual data
Cumulative accural - December 2011
This graph shows the cumulative recruitment at each hospital (site) over the course of the BCPP recruitment period.
Accrual data - December 2011
This pie chart shows the proportion of patients recruited to the BCPP study from the pool of potential participants across the West Midlands region.
Sample collection data
This graph shows the percentage of patients that donated blood, tissue and urine samples that form the basis of epidemiological and pathological studies of bladder cancer.
