Birmingham Lung Improvement Studies (BLISS)

The Birmingham Lung Improvement StudieS (BLISS) programme is a series of connected research studies about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) funded by a five-year programme grant from the National Institute for Health Research. The overall aim of the programme is to evaluate new ways of better identifying and managing patients with COPD in the community.
About BLISS
What is the BLISS programme about?
What is the BLISS programme about?
COPD is a progressive long-term respiratory condition which is vastly underdiagnosed. Many people with the condition are unaware that they have it until they are at a more advanced stage. More research is needed to find the most efficient way of identifying patients earlier in their disease, and also to identify which factors contribute to a better outlook for patients.
The work of BLISS will help to answer some important questions about COPD and provide an evidence-base for many important clinical and health service decisions. The results will inform the development of care for COPD patients alongside the Clinical Outcomes Strategy for COPD and Asthma in the UK.
Who is funding the BLISS programme?
Who is funding the BLISS programme?
The BLISS programme is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Programme Grants for Applied Research.
The NIHR provides the NHS with the support and infrastructure it needs to conduct first-class research funded by the Government and its partners alongside high quality patient care, education and training. Its aim is to support outstanding individuals (both leaders and collaborators), working in world-class facilities (both NHS and University), conducting leading edge research focused on the needs of patients.
This website represents independent research funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) under its Programme Grants for Applied Research Programme (Grant Reference Number RP-PG-0109-10061). The views expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health. The Birmingham COPD Cohort study is part of The Birmingham Lung Improvement StudieS – BLISS.
Would you like to collaborate?
The Birmingham Cohort Study is established as a platform for undertaking further research and 90% of our patients have agreed to be contacted about future research proposals
We are actively seeking collaboration with other researchers, which could range from novel analyses of data already collected, proposals for new questionnaires/measures, design and recruitment to new studies.
If you are interested in collaborating, please fill out our brief proforma (Word, 19.3KB) or make contact with Professor Peymane Adab via e-mail.
