Digital literacy workshops

Our digital literacy workshops help community members build confidence in the digital world and use everyday technologies independently and safely.
People talking around a table

The digital inclusion and wellbeing hub delivers digital literacy workshops through practical, hands-on learning, helping participants develop the skills needed to use devices, access public services, manage money online, communicate with others, stay safe online, and make greater use of digital tools for work, learning and everyday life.

Are the workshops flexible?

Sessions are flexible and can be tailored to different levels of experience, community needs and learning goals.

What will participants learn?

We cover the digital literacy in seven themes:

1. Getting started and confidence-building: Device basics, installing and updating apps, Wi-Fi, passwords, settings, storage, notifications and bring-your-own-device support.

2. Health and public services: Using the NHS app and NHS website, GP records and prescriptions, government gateway, HMRC services, council websites, libraries and online public-service tasks.

3. Digital finance and everyday money: Banking apps, secure login, digital payments, budgeting tools, mobile wallets, online purchases, Buy now pay later awareness, savings and investment scam warning signs.

4. Everyday digital life and communication: WhatsApp, messaging, photos, voice notes, video calls, online forms, uploading documents, cloud storage and safe photo sharing.

5. Safety, privacy and critical thinking: Phishing and scam awareness, checking websites, suspicious adverts, strong passwords, password managers, two-factor authentication and social-media privacy.

6. Work, study and productivity: Online job search, alerts, CV tools, online learning, scanning documents and organising important information digitally.

7. Sessions for retired participants: Digital hobbies, podcasts and online radio, YouTube for interests, safe online shopping and simple wellbeing or activity apps.

What workshop formats are available?

Our workshops can be delivered in a variety of formats depending on the needs of participants, partner organisations and community settings. Sessions can be offered as one-off workshops, drop-in support or more structured learning opportunities, providing flexible ways for people to build confidence and develop practical digital skills.

  • Digital helpdesk – informal drop-in support where participants bring their own device and questions.
  • Bring your own device basics – structured classes grouped by device type.
  • Digital skills buddy – one-to-one support centred on the learner’s own goals.
  • Navigating the NHS digitally – practical use of the NHS App and reliable health information.
  • Banking apps 101 – safe, introductory support for mobile and online banking.
  • Spot the scam – interactive examples of phishing, fake websites, messages and adverts.
  • Staying in touch – messaging, group chats and video calling.
  • Online job search and CV tools – practical employability-focused digital skills.
