Event Description
Stakeholder Engagement in Global Health Research This one-day skills workshop featured guest speakers from Lodestone Communications and Sian Williams from the International Primary Care Respiratory Group (IPCRG). It aimed to provide hands-on training in stakeholder engagement, emphasizing the importance of researchers effectively engaging with various stakeholders, including government and policymakers, to conduct impactful research that can improve healthcare practices and population health.
Community Engagement and Involvement in Global Health Research The one-day skills workshop featured speakers including Brianne Wenning from King's College London, Steven Blackburn and Magdalena Skrybant from the University of Birmingham, Razina Hussain and Heidi Surridge from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), Samantha Palmer from the Medical Research Council (MRC), and Dr. Gary Hickey, Senior Research Manager at the NIHR.

The workshop emphasized the importance of researchers engaging effectively with local communities to maximize impact. This engagement is crucial from the development of research questions and design to ensure relevance, and throughout the entire research

Implementation Science in Global Health Research The workshop featured three experts in implementation science: Lisa Hirschhorn from Northwestern University, Hilary Pinnock from the University of Edinburgh, and Maria Lazo Porras from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. They shared their knowledge with staff and external partners through presentations on implementation science in practice, study findings, and a panel discussion on its past, present, and future.
Capacity-Strengthening within International Research Partnerships Justin Pulford, from the Centre for Capacity Research (CCR) at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, led this one-day workshop. It provided practical guidance on designing and implementing equitable and effective capacity-strengthening plans within international North-South research partnerships.
Community Participatory Research in low- and middle-income countries Ed Fottrell from the Institute for Global Health at University College London hosted this lunchtime seminar, sharing his expertise and experience in community-led participatory research in low- and middle-income countries.
Conducting Health Economics in LMICs Visiting speakers Laura Bojke and Paul Revill from the University of York gave a talk during a lunchtime seminar on conducting health economics in lower- and middle-income countries: needs, challenges and solutions.
College of Medicine and Health (CMH) and the College of Arts and Law (CAL): Showcase and networking This seminar featured elevator pitch-style presentations where staff members shared their research to foster collaboration between researchers in the CMH and CAL. The event showcased ongoing research in both colleges and promoted networking opportunities.
Grant-Writing workshop This workshop, delivered by Scriptoria, covered how to turn ideas into a written proposal that is interesting and easy for reviewers to understand. Real-life examples were provided for participants to critique, complementing the theory. The course also covered various practical points, from budgeting to brainstorming tools to the professional writing cycle, including how to efficiently edit and proofread one's own work to a high standard.
Global Health Research Showcase: Linking Evidence to Policy and Practice The 2024 Global Health Research Showcase brought together academics to discuss their areas of work and the links from research evidence to policy and practice. There were speakers not only from the University of Birmingham, but also institutions such as the World Health Organization (WHO), The Red Cross and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Infographics workshop Infographics can make micro and macro level phenomena visible and sensible to audiences. This workshop, delivered by Gökhan Ersan demonstrated design strategies, the design process, and the tools that go into producing effective visual communication.
Global Health Public Engagement Event: UK Research and Global Health: What do we do, and why does it Matter? An insightful evening at The Exchange to showcase the University of Birmingham’s Global Health Research, highlighting its significance and impact. Chaired by Alice Roberts, the event featured dynamic panel discussions with leading experts and researchers, alongside interactive breakout stands where attendees could explore specific projects in depth and Alice lead a live drawing session which offered a fresh artistic lens on some of the global health initiatives underway at the University of Birmingham.
Birmingham Health Partners and University of Birmingham Networking Event

Birmingham Health Partners is a clinical academic alliance aimed at transforming the health, wellbeing and economic growth of our city-region. It brings together nine partners, including the University of Birmingham and Aston University, as well as hospitals and NHS Trusts.
This networking event brought together staff from the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Health Partners to explore how clinical colleagues are advancing healthcare on a global scale. It also provided a platform for academics to share their global health research, with the aim of fostering new collaborations and strengthening existing partnerships.

Policy brief & social media workshop

This session provided an introduction to public affairs and policy engagement led by Amil Khan, Public Affairs Manager in External Relations. Attendees had the opportunity to see case and studies and tools that can be used as framework for engagement with public policy. Topics included, how to write a policy brief, stakeholder mapping, using evidence, facts and academics research to support evidence-based policy making and social media for public policy impact.
