Funding Opportunities

Funders such as the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, and the Gates Foundation have long supported Global Health projects, however funding for Global Health research has recently been made more prominent in UK research portfolios, largely due to the Government’s 2015 Comprehensive Spending Review in 2015.
There is now significant funding available through:
This additional funding is a key component in the delivery of the UK Aid Strategy: tackling global challenges in the national interest and ensuring that UK research takes a leading role in addressing the problems faced by low and middle income countries (LMICs).

External Funding Opportunities
Response-mode opportunities
Response-mode opportunities
‘Response mode’ refers to standing schemes where investigator-led, bottom-up proposals will be assessed by standing Boards, Panels and Committees.
Both Wellcome and MRC – major funders of research for our College - have standing response-mode schemes that accept global health research to any competition. Please see the MRC website for a statement on their support for global health research.
If applying to either Wellcome or the MRC, we strongly advise you to discuss this with the funder programme manager.
Manged-mode Funding Opportunities
Manged-mode Funding Opportunities
‘Managed mode’ refers schemes time-limited schemes that typically have a limited remit, defined by the funder based on funding priorities identified through a top-down analysis of strategic gaps.
As these time-limited calls are often only live for a short while, we provide links to where UoB researchers can look up current opportunities:
