Low- Carbon Concrete UK-Thailand Workshop

Monday 19 – Tuesday 20 September 2016
Gisbert Kapp Building, N123
University of Birmingham

UK Thailand WorkshopConcrete is a high carbon-footprint material, emitting approximately 1 tonne of CO2 to the atmosphere per tonne of Portland cement produced. With greater concern about environmental impacts, the construction industry is being forced to find better ways to operate. Low-carbon materials seem to be a promising solution. Concrete with a lower carbon footprint may be achieved by replacing cement with alternative low-carbon binders or using recycled materials. Industrial waste is an example of a cement replacing material (CRM) that can be mixed with Portland cement to obtain “blended cement” which has a lower carbon-footprint and this also offers a solution for disposal of the waste.

The UK-Thailand Workshop on Low Carbon Concrete Workshop will discuss and promote the applications of low-carbon cement and concrete. It will seek to encourage more sustainable development and establish both joint research projects and business collaboration between UK and Thailand.

The main objectives of this workshop are:

• To exchange the knowledge about the development of modern low-carbon cement and concrete as well as advance techniques for studying its properties and characteristics.
• To disseminate recent research findings about low-carbon cement and concrete. These encompass their production, properties, mix designs, microstructural behaviours, and durability.
• To establish international research network between universities and industry organisations. The network shall be a good basis for future research collaboration and/or replication of R&D techniques in Thailand.
