coming home to syria

Talented new doctoral student Allaa Barri writes for the World Today Magazine, discussing initiatives to allow refugees to return to their war-ravaged country.

Allaa, in her capacity as Research Development and Communications Manager for the Chatham House Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Programme, argues that it is not the time to repatriate Syrian refugees by highlighting the interests of countries and political forces involved in these initiatives.

Allaa concludes:

‘When an internationally acceptable plan to repatriate refugees is implemented, independent observers should be appointed to monitor the process, with UN involvement to ensure that no one is being forced against their will to return to Syria and that their rights as well as those of the people who remained in Syria are respected’.
