HUST- Birmingham Partnership in China
A partnership between Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Wuhan and the University of Birmingham in the UK provides the opportunity for students to study in China and receive a dual degree from HUST and the University of Birmingham.
Earn Dual Degrees in Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy
Launched in 2025, the joint programme will allow students to gain a BSc Biomedical Sciences Honours degree from the University of Birmingham and a Pharmacy degree from HUST in four years. Graduates will benefit from holding qualifications in two subjects from two internationally respected universities.
Set in the brand-new HUST International Campus in Wuhan, students study both programmes in parallel, gaining knowledge and experience in both subjects over a shorter amount of time than would be required if studying the individual degree programmes. This collaboration offers students exposure to different learning and teaching techniques, as well as benefiting from the wide range of expertise held by the international team of teaching staff.
Over 20 Years of Successful Collaboration
This joint degree programme builds on over 20 years of collaboration between the University of Birmingham and HUST, in areas such as engineering and biosciences, nursing and dentistry.
World-Class Teaching from Leading Universities
The Biomedical Science degree will be taught in English by University of Birmingham staff. To ensure students are comfortable with the structure and language of an English degree, a first year language module, English for Biomedical Science is part of the programme. The Pharmacy degree will be taught by academic staff from HUST.
The University of Birmingham Biomedical Sciences degree has a proud record of achievement, ranked 12th in the UK for Biomedical Sciences (Complete University Guide 2026) and 5th in the Russell Group for student satisfaction (NSS 2026). Birmingham offers an outstanding student experience alongside excellent career prospects.
Whilst studying Biomedical Sciences, students will learn from leading experts who carry out fundamental scientific and medical research covering all major biomedical disciplines, thereby receiving a rich diversity of academic knowledge and experience. This programme develops transferable and key research skills such as data analysis and interpretation. This will help students to build a strong understanding of the key ethical and social issues surrounding medical science.
“Students embarking on these dual degrees will benefit from world-leading, research-led teaching jointly delivered by Birmingham and HUST academics in Wuhan, providing a distinctive and intellectually stimulating academic experience. Colleagues in Birmingham and Wuhan deliver a high-quality education experience, taught in English, which will equip Chinese students with skills that are eagerly sought after by international graduate employers.”
Excellent Employment Prospects for Graduates
Biomedical Science graduates have an excellent record of employment in a wide variety of careers. Graduates embark on laboratory work in universities, often in PhD positions and in hospitals. Many also go on to become clinical scientists and working for biotechnology companies. Other degree-related careers also include work in clinical trials, and in marketing and management roles at biotechnology companies.
The skills students acquire throughout the Biomedical Sciences programme are highly transferable, making it the ideal preparation for many other high-profile non-Biomedical Science careers, such as teaching, accountancy, law and banking.
