My Career

reggie-johal

I am the founder and managing director of Predator Nutrition limited.

After graduating from university I started work at Deloitte and Touche in London. Coming from an entrepreneurial background I decided that I would prefer to work in a field I was passionate about as well as set up my own business. Given my sporting background the sports nutrition industry was a natural fit for me.

The best part of my job is undoubtedly exploring new business strategies to enable the business to succeed in a very competitive and rapidly changing landscape (both in terms of sports nutrition and digital marketing). Being at the forefront of new trends is critical in my view.

Why Birmingham Business School?

Birmingham was attractive for a few reasons. One, my cousin had embarked on an economics degree there and also played American Football for Great Britain so that was a model for me to follow myself. Additionally, being the UK’s second largest city and being far removed from home, I considered it ideal for me to move into a new phase of my life.

The Birmingham experience

For myself it was my time with the American Football team at Birmingham. Out of that I gained some great friendships which I maintain to this day. I would add though that the campus is great especially when I look at some other big city universities.

Well, it taught me to cook for myself and not rely entirely on my parents! I would add that it channelled my natural athleticism into an interest in sports science and nutrition which ultimately laid down the foundation for where I am now.

Economics was a subject where I found it useful for understanding the world around me, not just the economy but how businesses and individuals behave in life. To the extent that every single person is motivated to improve their own position in life, I found that despite studying at a company or macroeconomic level, I was able to glean insights into the lives and the choices made by individuals.

Coming from a non-mathematics background the econometric side was always a challenge but I found that the rest of it was much easier.

Tips and advice

To succeed in any discipline requires a passion for the subject area combined with a willingness to work harder than anyone else. In today’s world competition for places at university and jobs is harder than ever so every person thinking of starting a degree should ask if it is right for them and if so, what they are willing to do to make sure they “win” at their degree.
