The University of Birmingham has been awarded funding for its Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Formulation Engineering.

The Centre for Doctoral Training in Formulation Engineering: Sustainable Structured Products, based at the School of Chemical Engineering, will enable the School to carry out internationally leading research on nano- to microstructure generation to deliver sustainable products whilst embedding manufacturability at the concept stage. The new CDT will also look to big data and industry 4.0 to develop the next generation of energy efficient manufacturing processes.

The EPSRC, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), recently announced seventy five Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT) that will receive a share from a total of £446m. The CDT in Formulation Engineering is amongst a variety of programmes aimed to train postgraduate students to tackle research and innovation challenges across the engineering and the physical sciences landscape.

The CDT in Formulation Engineering is a four year postgraduate programme, consisting of study and research, mainly based in industry. Students are placed within their sponsoring company and carry out industry-focused research. This enables researchers to work between industry and academia on research projects, giving them a unique understanding of how research is done for industrial benefit.
