The School of Chemistry regrettably announces that, after a period of illness, Professor Roy Johnston sadly passed away on Friday 16 August 2019.

Roy was a great chemist and a wonderful colleague, and his loss is felt by many across the academic community. His friendship and caring mentorship will be missed.

If you have any questions, or would like to send messages of condolences to the family, please email chemhospa@contacts.bham.ac.uk.

If you would like to send cards to the family, please send them to:

The funeral will take place on the 6th September, 10:30am, at St Marys in Selly Oak B29 6ND, followed by the crematorium at 11:30am (only for family and close friends). All are welcome to the wake at Selly Oak Methodist Church, Langleys Rd, B29 6HT following the church service. If you would like to attend, please contact the School of Chemistry via chemhospa@contacts.bham.ac.uk to help estimate numbers for catering purposes.

Due to the numbers attending the church drive won't be enough to hold all of the cars. Please arrive early and park in Lodge hill road, which is adjacent and you can walk up through the graveyard to the church or along the Bristol Road - about 5 mins each way.

The family ask that, instead of sending flowers, a donation is made to St Mary’s hospice www.birminghamhospice.org.uk; this can be done on the day.

Our thoughts are with Professor Johnston’s family at this time.
