The School of Chemistry hosted two of the 52 Salters' Festivals of Chemistry, which take place at Universities throughout the UK and Ireland for students from years 7 to 8. Teams of four pupils from 30 schools worked independently to solve the Salters' Challenge: "the mystery of the body in the Staff Room". As Forensic Chemists, they performed flame tests and other analytical techniques to provide evidence used to identify the suspect. After an additional University challenge to identify unmarked solutions, Dr Ray Plevey and other members of the School provided a 'chemical magic show'. Standards were high, making the judging difficult, but the prizes were awarded to schools who provided the correct answer and demonstrated a high degree of teamwork and safety conscious behaviour in the laboratory. The event was supported by Mrs Stephanie Mearns from the Salters' Institute and enjoyed immensely by pupils and staff alike.
