Professor Wendy Scase has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship for the project ‘Crafting English Letters: A Theory of Medieval Scribal Practice’.
These awards are reserved for research projects of outstanding originality and significance. Professor Scase will be investigating the choices of script, spelling, letter forms and methods of copying available to scribes of medieval manuscripts and the factors - literary, economic, social, communicative, and practical, that shaped their choices.
Professor Scase’s Fellowship begins in September 2016 and lasts for three years. With Dr Holly James-Maddocks joining the University of Birmingham in May 2016 as Leverhulme Early Career Fellow working on the decoration of medieval poetry manuscripts, the Department of English Literature will be in the remarkable position of having two Leverhulme Fellows in the medieval area over the next three years.
