On 5 June Dr Chris Laoutaris of The Shakespeare Institute gave a lecture with Yasmin Arshad, doctoral candidate at University College London, to mark the opening of the Queen's Gallery's new exhibition, 'In Fine Style: The Art of Tudor and Stuart Fashion', at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
The public event, conducted in concert with the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery, incorporated papers from Anna Reynolds, the curator of the 'In Fine Style' exhibition and Curator of Paintings at the Royal Collection Trust; Kate Gillespie, Senior Curator at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery; and David Wilcox, Lecturer at the Edinburgh College of Art. Laoutaris and Arshad presented their research on a mysterious painting by Marcus Gheeraerts known as the 'Persian Lady Portrait', which has sparked some racy Shakespeare conspiracy theories and continues to attract controversy. Laoutaris and Arshad will be publishing the results of their research in the British Art Journal later this year.later this year.
