Professor Ann-Marie Bathmaker and Dr Marion Bowl contribute to 'The Conversation' with an article on university application rates. Whilst the initial upward trend is encouraging, they suggest it also masks some worrying trends. There are gaps in the data produced by UCAS for instance, as those students who applied after the January 2014 admission deadline are missing and this includes many of the mature students and those who follow vocational routes. Figures for part-time students are also missing. Data from other sources is also examined, including the earning advantage associated with having a degree.
