Students who participated in the National Student Survey (NSS) have ranked Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham highly, with 98% of our final year students expressing overall satisfaction with their course

Civil Engineering at Birmingham 2018 NSS score

This ranks us first in the Russell Group for overall satisfaction, teaching, and assessment and feedback.

Our students also gave an overall satisfaction rating of 100% for our BEng and MEng Civil Engineering courses. 98% of final year students also said that staff are good at explaining things, and 95% agreed that staff valued students' views and opinions about their course.

Commenting on the results, Head of Department Professor Nigel Cassidy said:
Providing the very best teaching in a world-class learning and research environment is a key priority for us and I am delighted with the NSS results. They reflect the hard work, passion and excellence of our students and staff and illustrate the outstanding student experience we deliver at the University.

The survey is one of the key metrics underlying the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), in which the University of Birmingham was awarded Gold in June 2017.

The NSS asks 27 questions, relating to eight aspects of the learning experience. Students are also given the opportunity to make positive and negative comments in an open answer question. For more information about what is asked in the NSS, please see The National Student Survey Questionnaire (pdf).

The NSS is run by Ipsos MORI and commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) on behalf of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), the Department for Economy Northern Ireland (DfENI), Health Education England (HEE), National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and participating private/alternative Higher Education providers and Scottish Higher Education Institutions.
