The annual CAHA Colloquium to showcase postgraduate research in the department and beyond will be taking place again this year on Wednesday 2 May 2018. The conference, named ‘Bridges over Barriers: Interdisciplinarity in Research’ for 2018, seeks to highlight the topic of interdisciplinarity in the postgraduate research taking place at the University of Birmingham.
The colloquium is a chance for you to highlight your research to your fellow research students and members of staff and help show off the wide range of research taking place across CAHA, IIICH, and CBOMGS. It is a required element of study for all PhD students in their 2nd Year Full-Time and 3rd or 4th Year Part-Time.

We invite abstract submissions from postgraduates in the Department of Classics, Ancient History, and Archaeology, the Ironbridge Institute for Cultural Heritage, and the Centre for Byzantine, Modern Greek Studies, as well as other postgraduates in CAL whose research engages with the contemporary issues of interdisciplinarity in connection with any related subject. This year we are looking for you to show how your PhD research interacts (or will interact, or even won’t interact) with the increasingly important trend of interdisciplinarity, whether that is making use of theories or comparisons with other disciplines and cultures, applying modern theories, or even not engaging with other disciplines and why? Possible angles include, but are not limited to:
- The question of: Disciplinary, Interdisciplinary, Multidisciplinary, Transdisciplinary, Cross-disciplinary, or Non-disciplinary?
- The counter-trends against Interdisciplinarity today
- Theory and Practice of Interdisciplinarity today in Research
Subjects may include, but are not limited to:
- Using Gender Studies in Research
- Using Modern Theories in Research
- Digital Humanities and Computer Applications
- Heritage and Media Studies
- Classical Reception Studies
- Language Studies
- Cross-period Studies of the Ancient World to Other Contexts
- Experiencing the Ancient World Today
Presentations may take the form of a 20 minute paper or an A2-3 research poster. Please note in your submission whether you are submitting for a 20 minute paper or a research poster. Abstracts should not exceed a maximum of 300 words and need to be submitted by Friday 23rd March 2018 at 5pm to: cahacolloquium@gmail.com.
