International Women’s Day falls on Thursday 8 March and academics and students from across the School of History and Cultures are coming together to highlight the women that inspire their research.
To increase the visibility of women around the Arts Building, all staff in History & Cultures have been invited to post at least one image and some biographical information of a woman important to their research or that they find inspirational on their office door. These pictures will be shared on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #IWD_BRIHC
As part of Women's History Month, based upon nominations from staff and students, forty stickers of notable historical women; ranging in size from thirty centimetres to a metre have been created and will be placed around the College of Arts and Laws’ buildings on 15 March. They will be accompanied by a short biographical piece of text. Students, staff and visitors to the campus will be invited to walk around, find out about the historical figures and having completed the trail enter a raffle style draw to win Amazon vouchers. People taking part are invited to share pictures of them following the trail on #IWD_BRIHC.
Prior to International Women’s Day on Tuesday 6 March, there will be a roundtable discussion with paper presentations on Women in Brazilian History. Topics of discussion will include slavery and motherhood, women on the left in Brazil, the representation of race and gender in transnational performance, and police violence against female favela residents. You can register to attend online. Previous knowledge of Brazilian history is definitely not a prerequisite.
