Dr Orakhelashvili presents on International Sanctions

Birmingham Law School co-sponsored, and Dr Alexander Orakhelashvili gave a presentation at, the conference on International Sanctions: Legal, Policy and Business Implications, organised by the London Centre for International Legal Practice and held at Arundel House in London on 19 March 2015.

Dr Orakhelashvili’s paper concentrated on the statutory authority needed for international organisations to adopt economic sanctions of the kind that the EU has adopted against Iran and Syria over the past few years. Further attention was given to challenges to those sanctions in the English legal system, especially in terms of the common law jurisdiction of courts in relation to public law remedies, the scope and review of the Royal prerogative more generally the relationship between the courts and the Executive.
