Birmingham Law School, University of Birmingham is inviting applications from South Asian early career researchers in law and cognate fields for the British Academy Writing Workshop 2018 to be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 12-14 October 2018.

The Workshop is supported by the British Academy, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), and the South Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights Studies (SAILS). The Workshop aims to bring together a team of UK-based scholars and journal editors, senior academics from Bangladesh, and approximately 25 early-career researchers based in South Asia. The Workshop is designed to encourage and support early career researchers from the region to develop scholarly publications for high impact journals, and build scholarly networks and develop connections with academics and journal editors based in the UK.

The Writing Workshop will be organised under five themes:

  • (i) international law
  • (ii) human rights and social justice
  • (iii) gender equality
  • (iv) sustainable development
  • (v) security

All selected papers will be clustered under these themes, and will receive intensive feedback from designated resource persons.  A number of panels will also be organised on various aspects of academic writing and publishing.

Only academic researchers based in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka are eligible to apply. Interested individuals should email an abstract of the paper they wish to write (max. 500 words), Curriculum Vitae, and a statement on how they will benefit from the workshop (max. 500 words) to writingworkshops2018@contacts.bham.ac.uk by 13 May 2018.

Shortlisted participants will be required to submit their draft articles (max. 8,000 words) by 12 August 2018 as a precondition of their participation in the workshop. (Based on their successful participation in the October workshop, and the quality of their revised manuscripts, a small number of participants will be invited to a follow–up workshop to be held in December 2018. This will provide additional, individual support for publishing in leading journals).

Workshop participants from outside Bangladesh will be offered round-trip economy tickets and accommodation. Meals and refreshments will be provided during workshop sessions for all participants.
