Emalee Beddoes, an MPhil student, has been awarded a Paul Mellon bursary to speak at the University of Kent’s annual interdisciplinary Cradled in Caricature conference to take place in June 2011. The title of her paper is ‘Imaging the Inside: Edmond Xavier Kapp, Psychological Portraiture and the Assumption of the Creative “Type”.’
Emalee notes how her paper developed out of her experience as a Barber Intern: ‘As part of my internship with the collections and education department at the Barber Institute, I was given the project of curating a print bay exhibition of portraits of composers from the Barber’s extensive collection of Edmond Xavier Kapp’s caricatures, or “reflections” as he chose to call them. I was interested in the way the artist simultaneously engages in the rhetoric of expressionist portraiture and the traditions of caricature
The paper will be published in Skepsi, the University of Kent’s School of European Cultures and Languages peer-reviewed online journal.
