The DAAD Sauerkraut Cup, which was established in 2004, is an annual inter-university football tournament between students studying German across the UK. Its aim is to promote the study of German, whilst creating networking opportunities amongst the participating students.
Following the enormously successful 10th anniversary celebrations in London last year, the eleventh DAAD Sauerkraut Cup will be hosted by the University of Birmingham, organized by the local DAAD-Lektorin Dorothee Sachse and a group of enthusiastic students. The event is on Saturday 26th April 2014; you can register your teams at any time from now up until 4th March. All you have to do is get together a mixed-gender 6-a-side team with a maximum of three substitutes - and make sure that at least one player of the ‘opposite sex’ is actually playing. Each university can present up to three teams. To make Germany’s favourite sport just a little bit more exciting, all games will be refereed in German. This year, spectators and players alike will be encouraged to create a Bundesliga-style atmosphere / theme. Teams are asked to have names that combine their university name with one from the Bundesliga (Germany or Austria) or the Swiss Super League. Banners, face paint, creative tricots, chants, anything that helps create a truly authentic ‘German’ football atmosphere should keep the spirits high! On the day there will be a trophy for the overall winning team - and a jury will choose the team that has created the best ‘atmosphere’, and there’s a reward for the highest-scoring team in the German Quiz, too.
To round the day off, there will be an after-party at which you can quench your thirst, analyse the match, and mingle with the competitors from earlier in the day.
