Award-winning composer and University of Birmingham graduate, Jonathan Goldstein (BMus Music, 1989) is celebrating the release of his debut classical album Cyclorama, released earlier this month. Jonathan has enjoyed a long and varied career in composition since achieving a First Class Honours degree in Music where he studied under the acclaimed Jonty Harrison here at Birmingham.

During his degree, Jonathan composed music for numerous Drama Department productions and was a champion of student composition, commissioning an ambitious programme of piano works during his studies.

His interest in composition for dramatic productions led him from the University to the Royal Shakespeare Company and beyond. His work spans film, television, theatre, live events and advertising – he has composed for Sky, Tesco and the BBC, among many others.

His first album of instrumental songs performed by the Balanescua Quartet with James Pearson and Grace Davidson is described as a ‘mix of contemporary classical idioms which gradually present an unfolding story’, like a cyclorama (the panoramic backdrop used in film and theatre).

Jonathan said: ‘Working with esteemed contemporary composers at the University undoubtedly inspired my career. I’m thrilled to be releasing my first album.’
