University of Birmingham Voices were pleased to perform last month with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and conductor, John Wilson, at Symphony Hall, Birmingham in a performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s opera, The Yeomen of the Guard.
The performance featured a number of international soloists alongside the light-music maestro – including Sir Thomas Allen, Sarah Fox, and Benjamin Hulett. The university was also pleased to provide its own student soloists for the performance, with Peter Brooks, Barney Walsh, and Bradley Gill taking to the stage with their esteemed colleagues.
Prepared by Chorus Master, Julian Wilkins, University of Birmingham Voices brought together student singers studying a breadth of academic disciplines at the University of Birmingham. Rehearsed across the start of the spring term, the choir welcomed John Wilson to the university in advance of the performance in February to discuss the music of Gilbert & Sullivan, as well as prepare the music for the March concert.
Choirs are an essential component of music-making at the Department of Music, connecting the University with the public, and the eclectic mix on offer – ranging from the auditioned Birmingham University Singers to the un-auditioned University Chorus – enables the University to engage with around 350 people per week, of all ages and abilities, in and around the local community.
