Birmingham University Singers were pleased to perform this month with Yale Glee Club of Yale University in the Elgar Concert Hall.
Hailed as “one of the best collegiate singing ensembles in the United States”, the choirs performed together as part of the Glee Club’s 2019 tour to the UK. Under the batons of Professor Simon Carrington (himself Professor Emeritus of Yale) and Jeffrey Douma, the programme included works by Byrd, Paul Crabtree, Bernstein, Stanford, and newly commissioned music by Karen Siegel.
Yale continue their tour throughout March, with performances in St. Andrews in Scotland, London, and Trinity College Chapel in Cambridge. The choir, founded in 1861, is one of the oldest college choruses in the United States, and has performed in not only every major city in the US, but to enthusiastic audiences across Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. During its history, the Glee Club has appeared under the baton of many distinguished guest conductors from Leopold Stokowski and Robert Shaw, to Marin Alsop and David Hill.
Choirs are an important part of University Music in Birmingham, and offer unrivalled opportunities for young singers at any university in the UK. Regular engagements include collaborations with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Proms in London, as well as biennial European touring and masterclasses with eminent conductors and professional vocal groups.
