The School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music has a vibrant, international postgraduate community which offers excellent research opportunities and a supportive working environment.

We have a wide range of disciplines from Modern Languages, which incorporates French, German, Hispanic and Italian Studies, to Art History which is housed in the renowned Barber Institute of Fine Arts, and the Department of Music which is one of the largest music departments in the country.

We are internationally renowned for our research and we host public lectures and seminar programmes too, so you’ll benefit from expert knowledge and innovative collaborations that help you make the most of your postgraduate education.

AHRC funding for PhD students

The University of Birmingham is part of the Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (M4C), offering Arts and Humanities Research Council PhD studentships for campus-based programmes. These include a number of Collaborative Doctoral Award opportunities. Each studentship includes research fees, a substantial maintenance grant and additional research training support. Applications are open until 12pm, 13 January 2021.
