On Wednesday, 6 March 2019 we welcomed back six of our alumni to the University to share their insight as LANS graduates with current students.

Interview over Skype

The event kicked-off with presentations by Josh Kearney currently studying a PhD in Cognitive Motor Neuroscience here at the University of Birmingham, Maya Keeley who is just out of an internship with Lionsgate, Emily Skyrme who is currently on a Graduate Training Scheme with Aldi, Rachel O-Brien who is the Disabled Students officer for NUS and Ella-Jane Coxwell from the start-up Goodlord who Skyped us from London. They were joined by Jennifer Bainbridge, structured trade finance analyst at BP, as an honorary Alumni guest. The presentations were followed by a Q&A where our alumni shared interview tips and advice on how to translate the transferable skills gained within a LANS degree into commercial language.

Presentation to the audience

The second part of the event involved a workshop by University’s Careers Network on LinkedIn with a focus on the skills Graduate Employers are looking for Alumni to have gained from their undergraduate degree programmes. We discussed the increased inter-cultural awareness gained from the Year Abroad alongside conflict resolution gained from LANS Core Module group projects and the adaptability needed to study a broad range of subjects. The Panopto recording of the LinkedIn workshop is available here.

Discussions afterwards

The event ended with a socialisation opportunity for current students to approach our alumni and ask any further specific questions and exchange contact details for future correspondence.
