Mathematics at the University of Birmingham has scored top marks in the 2020 National Student Survey, ranking 1st in the Russell Group in five categories.
The categories that ranked in 1st for the School were:
- The teaching on my course
- Learning opportunities
- Assessment and feedback
- Academic support
- Learning community
The subject has performed particularly strongly against competitors in ‘learning community’ and ‘learning opportunities’ categories, ranking 1st in the Russell Group for the third year in a row. Our excellent learning environment is further demonstrated in that over 90% of students agree that their course has provided them with opportunities to explore ideas or concepts in depth.
Overall, the subject is ranked 3rd in the Russell Group for overall satisfaction with a score of 87%, and is the second year in a row to have placed in the overall top three in the Russell Group.

Commissioned by the Office for Students, the NSS is a high profile annual survey that asks students about their experiences in higher education. Every university in the country takes part. 311,432 students responded to the survey this year.
