Each year, student nurses, mentors and Universities around the UK can be nominated for the prestigious Student Nursing Times Awards. This year, after a tough stage of judging, we are proud to announce that The School of Nursing has had a record year, having been shortlisted eight times across various categories.
As the largest number of shortlistings the school has ever received, this reflects the hard work, passion and dedication of both our teaching staff and students. It is also the first time the School has had more than one student appear in a single category.

- Abi Thompson – Student Nurse of the year: Child
- Helena Corbett – Student Nurse of the year: Child
- Bethany Howard – Outstanding contribution to student affairs
- Travis Norton - Outstanding contribution to student affairs
- Travis Norton – Student of the year: Adult
- Lucy Mason – Most Inspirational Student Nurse
- Jane Nicol – Educator of the Year
Speaking on his nomination for both “Student Nurse of the Year” and “Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs,” Travis Norton said he was “really proud and a little surprised and humbled” to have been shortlisted twice.
Jane Nicol, who has been shortlisted for Educator of the Year said that she was honoured that colleagues and students took the time to nominate her. “On a day to day basis you just tend to get on with things, it is lovely have what you do recognised.”
Lucy Mason, who is shortlisted for “Most Inspirational Student Nurse” has been battling with cancer whilst studying. She said “I was very touched that my fellow colleagues felt I was worthy of being nominated and that they felt that I was an inspiration to them. [I think] it’s misunderstood what is involved in completing a nursing degree while also having to undergo treatment. People think that this is a barrier to becoming a nurse but I want my nomination to speak to other potential student nurses that having cancer or other conditions doesn’t have to stop them from training.”
The awards will be announced at a glittering ceremony on Thursday 26 April 2018 at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
