With such fierce competition in the field of psychology, work experience can carry as much weight as academic achievement, if not more.

This is why University of Birmingham students, Anya Mohideen and Jessica Makepeace, decided to venture further afield to gain the crucial experience they needed, travelling abroad to participate in a Mental Health Placement, with volunteer organisation SLV.Global.

Anya and Jessica were trained and supported by local professionals to help equip them with the skills to work sensitively within another culture, and in often under-resourced facilities and challenging environments. For four weeks, Anya and Jessica worked with service users of all ages, backgrounds and abilities on their placement. Anya and Jessica facilitated fun, meaningful sessions to increase intellectual and social stimulation, as well as much-needed human contact to individuals who, due to a lack of resources, are often treated with medication alone.

Anya Mohideen - "Taking part in the placement allowed me to gain rich experience in such a competitive field. Along with this, it gave me the opportunity to make friends for life, unforgettable memories and immerse myself in the Balinese culture and local community."

Jessica Makepeace - "During my placement in Bali I learned so much about working with service users, non-verbal communication and cultural sensitivity. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I would recommend to anyone interested in psychology and healthcare!"
