A Theology and Religion undergraduate student, Anna Mullins, has won the nationally competitive British Association for Jewish Studies best essay prize.
Anna graduated from the School over the summer and her dissertation, entitled ‘A Gendered Analysis of Prisoner-Physicians in KL Auschwitz, with a focus on Dr Gisella Perl’ was submitted for consideration for the annual BAJS essay prize – a national prize for dissertations in Jewish Studies – by Dr Isabel Wollaston.
Anna is delighted with the award and plans to donate some of the £200 prize money to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.
The BAJS Committee described Anna’s dissertation as ‘very well-researched, fluently written and highly reflective analysis of Gisella Perl’s haunting testimony on her time at Auschwitz as a prisoner-physician. It is methodologically sophisticated, drawing on Holocaust and genocide studies as well as on gender studies, and it presents an important, nuanced and often convincing argument in pointing to the complexities of the role of gender in the experience and writings of Holocaust survivors … The approach is excellent and original, and we would hope that you will move on to PhD studies’.
