Karen Newbigging standing outside Number 10

Dr Karen Newbigging in a meeting at 10 Downing Street, discussed Black Asian and Minority Ethnic Mental Health.

The purpose of the meeting was to review the evidence for disparities in experience and outcomes for BAME communities, identify how government, the health sector, communities, and wider society can tackle variances in mental health outcomes and identify the implications for further research. Dr Newbigging said:

“I am pleased this on the agenda but it has been for a long time and urgent action is needed to stem the tide of increasing detention of people form specific communities under the Mental Health Act. I think the answer lies in investment in communities and working in partnership to codesign mental health prevention and support that is well geared to meet people’s needs.”
