Two University of Birmingham graduates have each won prizes at the 2017 Social Worker of the Year Awards which took place on Friday 24th November.
Sarah Parsons (PG Dip Leadership and Management for Social Work, 2009) and Seanna Lassetter (PG Dip Specialist Social Work with Adults, 2017) both received silver awards in the ‘Raising the Profile of Social Work’ category.
Other University of Birmingham finalists included, Amanda Lewis (MA Social Work, 2005) who was nominated for ‘Practice Educator of the Year’ and Shelagh Butler (PG Dip Leadership and Management for Social Work, 2009) who was nominated for the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’.
The strength of the University of Birmingham’s social work programme has been recognised through multiple prizes at the Social Worker of the Year awards in the past, including the ‘Adult Social Worker of the Year’ award, won by graduates of the University of Birmingham in 2014 and 2015, and ‘Newly Qualified Adult Social Worker of the Year’ won by a graduate of the programme in 2016.
Professor Barbara Fawcett, Head of Department of Social Work and Social Care commented:
“'We are delighted that our social work alumni consistently do so well in the Social Worker of the Year awards. It is testimony to the quality of the Social Work courses at the University of Birmingham and to their ongoing commitment and determination.”
The Social Worker of the Year Awards is supported by both the Department for Education and Department of Health and recognises the challenging work that qualified social workers do day in, day out, and highlight their achievements. There are sixteen categories in total across the specialisms of both children’s and adult services, including an ‘Overall Social Worker of the Year’ award.
