Research in the Department of Social Work and Social Care

We undertake world-leading research and evaluation to develop new theories and concepts, and influence both policy and practice. Our inter-disciplinary research community includes academic staff, research fellows and PhD students, and we seek to promote research excellence within an environment that allows researchers to flourish.

Our empirical work is funded by formal research bodies (such as the Economic and Social Research Council and the National Institute for Health Research), policy bodies (such as the Department for Education and the Department of Health & Social Care), and charitable institutions (such as the Wellcome Trust and the Leverhulme Trust). We regularly collaborate with researchers from other disciplines and schools in the University, and with other research-intensive institutions.

  • Improving Adult Care Together

IMPACT is the UK centre for implementing evidence in adult social care. Working across the four nations and with co-production at its heart, we draw on insights from research, lived experience, and practice knowledge to make a difference to front-line services, and to people’s lives.
