Dr Michael Grey

Dr Michael Grey is one of the keynote speakers at the 3rd Annual Conference for the UK and Ireland Chapter of the International FES Society (IFESSUKI). The conference is jointly organised between the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust.

The conference, entitled FES: From basic science to patient experience is being held in the Muirhead Building at the University of Birmingham between 27-29 April 2012. Registration is opn and the deadline for submission of abstracts is 31 December 2011. See the IFESSUKI website for subbmission details - www.ifessuki.com.

The UK and Ireland Chapter of IFESS was formed in 2009 to promote the research, application, and understanding of electrical stimulation.

Research into functional electrical stimulation has reached an exciting stage in its development. For example, our understanding of the way in which the central nervous system responds to peripheral stimulation has developed with new imaging technologies. There have also been significant technical advances in FES technologies for both clinical and sporting applications. In the clinical arena, the recent publications and the NICE guidelines supporting the use of FES for foot drop reflects the growing strength of evidence base.

The conference will provide an opportunity for researchers, clinicians, patients, companies, charities and other interested parties to meet and share the latest research and experience in FES.

Dr Grey is a motor neuroscience physiologist with interests in cortical/spinal plasticity and neurorehabilitation. He uses non-invasive electrophysiology, transcranial magnetic stimulation and neuroimaging techniques to study human movement. Read Dr Grey's profile here.
