Professor Victoria (Vicky) Hodgetts Morton is Professor of Women’s Health and Perinatal Medicine at the University of Birmingham and an Honorary Consultant Obstetrician at Birmingham Women’s Hospital. Her clinical and research work focuses on improving outcomes for women, babies and families, with interests in preterm birth, high-risk pregnancy, maternal morbidity and reducing inequalities in maternity care.

She leads and contributes to major national research programmes and clinical trials designed to translate evidence into improvements in maternity services. She is Co-Lead for Theme 2 of the NIHR Maternity Disparities Consortium, focusing on pregnancy, birth and early postnatal maternal health, and holds senior research leadership roles across the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

Women’s Health intercalation

Vicky is passionate about developing the next generation of clinical academics and researchers. She supervises doctoral and postgraduate researchers, leads undergraduate and postgraduate education within women's health, and mentors early career clinicians pursuing academic careers. She has secured substantial competitive research funding, published extensively in leading medical journals, and continues to build collaborative research programmes that improve the health of women, babies and families both nationally and internationally.

Her research spans preterm birth prevention, fetal growth restriction, maternal medicine, infection prevention, maternity safety and reducing inequalities in maternity care. She has led and contributed to numerous national and international multicentre studies that have changed clinical practice and informed national and international guidelines, including landmark randomised controlled trials in cervical cerclage, prevention of surgical site infection and maternal surveillance. Her work is driven by a commitment to ensuring that research translates into meaningful improvements in everyday clinical care.

Vicky is Co-Lead of the Pregnancy, birth and early postnatal maternal health of the NIHR Maternal Disparities Consortium, a major national collaboration bringing together researchers, clinicians, women, families and communities to address persistent inequalities in maternity care and outcomes. The Consortium is developing evidence-based interventions across the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal pathways, with a focus on equitable access to high-quality care for all women and babies. Working alongside colleagues across the UK, she leads research to improve maternity pathways through better risk assessment, surveillance and implementation of evidence into practice.

Alongside her academic role, Victoria provides specialist clinical care in obstetrics and preterm birth prevention and holds several regional and national leadership positions within NHS England and professional organisations. She has led regional programmes to improve the prevention of preterm birth and fetal growth restriction, supporting implementation of evidence-based care across maternity services.

Her vision is to deliver research that not only advances scientific understanding but also transforms maternity care, reduces health inequalities and ensures that every woman and baby has the best possible opportunity for a healthy pregnancy and birth.
