His research focuses in health law field where he examines issues relating to clinical negligence litigation and patient safety. National and global patient safety policy development and UHC (Universal Health Coverage). He has a fortnightly column in the British Journal of Nursing. He is a frequent contributor to the Bill of Health published by the Petrie-Flom Center at Harvard Law School where he was a Visiting Scholar in November 2018. John is also a Visiting Professor of Law at Loyola University Chicago, School of Law.

Biography

John has held a number of senior positions in a variety of academic management areas. He has had roles in international development, international student recruitment and curriculum development. He was formerly Associate Professor at Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University and prior to that worked in Further, Higher Education in London, Worcester and practiced as a Barrister.

Research

His research has focussed on how the law relates to nursing, medicine and the tort aspects of patient safety initiatives. Further work has been done on national, global patient safety law and governance particularly in developing and transitioning countries. How to develop a patient centric safety system and just culture in health care systems, nationally in the NHS and globally.

  • August 2018: Written evidence submitted to House of Commons Parliamentary Committee examining the draft Health Service Safety Investigations Bill: A new capability for investigating patient safety incidents. His written evidence was published and quoted in the final report.
