Housing support

Housing Hub is a suite of webpages hosted by The Guild of Students in collaboration with the University, that provide advice and guidance to empower students to make the best house hunting decisions during your time at Birmingham. These practical guides will help you make the transition into the private housing sector as easily as possible.

Looking for your new home

Housing Hub will give you all the advice you could need to help you make the best decision when choosing your new home. From choosing your new housemates, through to where to start with your housing search.

Moving into your new home

All important advice on these topics and more can be found via the Guild, who offer a free, impartial and confidential advice service for University of Birmingham students. You can also check out the Citizens Advice on housing for insight on all things moving into a new home.

Getting to know your community

Truly make the most of your time in your community. There is advice on safety, saying ‘hi’ to your neighbours, and how to get involved in the diverse spaces around you, to which the Guild is always there to advise on. Your Community Ambassadors are also here to help you feel proud of your local area and a part of your community. From community coffee mornings to litter picks and canal clean-ups, the team offers lots of activities to help you make a difference and meet others in your area.

Moving out of your home

We cover exactly how to prepare for leaving a rented house, including leaving the house just as you found it, using the Guild’s Junkbusters service to donate your unwanted items, and giving you important information about avoiding unnecessary (and unwanted) charges.

  • Housing Hand

Landlords will ask tenants for a UK-based ‘guarantor’ – often a parent or relative, who will be asked to financially cover the rent if you fail to pay. This can be difficult for some students – especially international students. That’s why the University has partnered with Housing Hand. They act as a UK guarantor for a fee that is calculated according to your rent amount and can be paid in one go or monthly.
