Living in Stratford-upon-Avon

Ducks swimming in the river Avon

If you’re studying at the Shakespeare Institute Stratford-upon-Avon is the place to live. With its cobbled streets, merry markets, Shakespeare’s old house and school, and of course RSC, it’s steeped in fascinating history and is a vibrant place to call home.

This page provides guidance on finding accommodation in Stratford, and we give as much assistance as possible to help students find somewhere to live. You may also find the main University’s Living in Stratford-upon-Avon website page useful.

  • Finding accommodation in Stratford

As there is currently no University accommodation in Stratford-upon-Avon our students rent privately. The most popular options are either in shared houses, flats, bedsits or private houses. The rental market can be competitive, so we recommend starting your search early, and preparing any documents you may need in advance. What to expect before you arrive

Most letting agencies and landlords will ask for references. These may include:

  • A previous landlord reference
  • A former employer reference
  • A character reference

We recommend arranging these before your arrival in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Costs you should prepare for

  • At least one month’s rent in advance
  • A deposit typically equivalent of 5 – 6 weeks’ rent

If you do not have a UK guarantor, rent may be higher or additional conditions may apply. The University has partnered with Housing Hand, who can act as a UK guarantor for a fee based on your rent amount.
