    Hello, my name is Richa!

I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada but my family moved there from Vadodara, India.

I came to Birmingham straight from high school and am currently a first-year student in the LLB Law program at the University of Birmingham.

I am honoured to have received the LLB and LLB for Graduates Scholarship and am excited to share my experience.

How did you decide on your subject of study?

I have always known that I wanted to pursue a career in law, since there are so many sectors you can choose from within the profession.

During high school, I was drawn towards the humanities courses, and one that particularly influenced me was Global Politics. It sparked my interest not only in political systems but also in the legal system and human rights issues.

What's your favourite module and why?

One of my favourite modules so far is Public Law - I'm particularly drawn to how we study the relationship between the government, legal institutions, and individual rights.

I have also been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy Contract Law. Understanding how contracts form and connecting it to my interest in business has been incredibly interesting. I am excited to explore this further as it aligns with my goal of working in corporate law in the future.

What's the most underrated spot in Birmingham?

The most underrated spot in Birmingham are the canals near Battery Retail Park. Any time my flatmates and I head to Sainsbury’s supermarket, we love to sit by the canal on a sunny day (when we get one!), enjoy the beautiful scenery, drink some tea or coffee and chat about our week!

What's one piece of advice you can share for incoming students?

One piece of advice I would give to incoming students is to approach university life with an open mind. As an international student, transitioning to a new country and starting a completely new academic journey can feel overwhelming, especially if you are coming straight from high school like I did.

It is natural to feel a sense of self-doubt or wonder if you’re good enough to be here.

But always remember that you were chosen by the University of Birmingham for a reason, and you chose this university because it offered something that stood out to you.

Embrace that confidence and allow yourself to grow both academically and personally. Every lecture, seminar, and reading are an opportunity to learn and grow, so keep an open mind and immerse yourself in the learning process.
