Creating Lasting Impact
As Manager of Communications & External Affairs at Ghana’s Securities and Exchange Commission and Founder of Done by Us, King Wellington applies his expertise to strengthen businesses, support economic growth, and mentor the next generation of leaders. Discover how his MBA experience helped him bridge ambition with opportunity, creating lasting impact in Ghana and beyond.
Bridging Ambition with Opportunity
After completing his Full-Time MBA in 2021, King returned to Ghana with a vision: to bridge the gap between ambition and opportunity. He refocused Done by Us, an integrated consultancy and investment firm, to provide tailored solutions for businesses navigating Ghana’s dynamic market. Through strategic advisory services, the firm has helped SMEs, international corporations, and government agencies thrive.
However, King’s ambition didn’t stop at consulting. Recognising the need for practical business education, he launched the Africa Street MBA—a programme designed to equip aspiring entrepreneurs with the skills and mentorship needed to succeed. To date, the initiative has trained and mentored over 7,000 young people directly and impacted more than 10,000 indirectly, empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds, including women, persons with disabilities, and those from economically disadvantaged communities.
A Day in the Life: Balancing Business and Regulation
King’s day begins before sunrise, planning his schedule the night before. Mornings start with meetings at Done by Us and Africa Street MBA, followed by his responsibilities at the Securities and Exchange Commission. As a key figure in Ghana’s financial sector, he ensures effective communication and external engagement, playing a pivotal role in regulating the country’s capital markets. Afternoons are dedicated to stakeholder meetings, client engagements, and mentoring sessions, while evenings involve business strategy discussions, events, and family time.
The Birmingham MBA Experience: A Catalyst for Success
Reflecting on his time at the University of Birmingham, King credits the MBA programme for refining his leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The diverse classroom environment, exposure to global business challenges, and emphasis on ethical leadership shaped his approach to entrepreneurship and economic development. The MBA Career Team and Alumni Network also played a crucial role in his professional journey, providing ongoing support and guidance that continues to benefit him today.
“The University of Birmingham's commitment to community engagement and sustainable development instilled in me a sense of purpose beyond profit. It encouraged me to view business as a tool for positive change and to prioritise social impact alongside economic growth.”
Advice for Future Graduates
King’s advice to MBA graduates is simple: take action. He also highlights the importance of building different forms of capital—relationships, knowledge, and values—that extend beyond financial success.
“Have a sense of urgency, approach life with a proactive and can-do attitude, and always take action. When you commit with consistency, you can achieve anything in life.”
Looking Ahead
With ambitions to further his academic journey and pursue a PhD, King Wellington continues to make a lasting impact in Ghana and beyond. His journey exemplifies how the Birmingham MBA equips leaders not just for career success, but for meaningful, transformative change.
