Who can apply for BISS?
To be accepted onto BISS, you must be over 18 and studying an undergraduate programme at a university outside the UK or be registered as an international student at a UK university. You must be of good academic standing and meet the BISS English Language requirements, as well as subject-specific requirements if applicable. For more information, please see entry requirements.
How do I apply?
Applications for BISS 2026 will open in January 2026.

Can I apply for more than one BISS programme?
No, you can only apply for one programme option.
When will I hear from you about my application?
Students will receive an email confirming that their application has been received by the University. All applications are processed by the University admissions office, which will aim to inform you of the outcome within two weeks.
Please note that applications without an academic transcript will not be considered.
I am under 18 years old. Can I apply to BISS?
Unfortunately, BISS is currently only open to applications from students over the age of 18 years.

How much is the BISS fee?
Please see our dates and fees page for full 2026 costs, scholarships, and discounts. Students applying from current exchange partners benefit from a tuition-fee discount.
What is included in the BISS fee?
The fee includes tuition and assessment, self-catering accommodation in University halls of residence, and a programme of social events.
Social programme activities are covered in your fees, but meals and drinks during the activities are not included.
Meals and local train tickets are not included in the tuition fee.
Is there a deposit or application fee?
You will not be charged a deposit or application fee. The BISS fee must be paid in full by the stipulated deadline in order to receive the Admission paperwork, which will be necessary to apply for your visa.

Are the academic programmes credit-bearing?
BISS programmes do not provide academic credit. Assessments are marked on a pass/fail basis and participants will receive a certificate of completion and transcript. We advise that students who wish to gain external credit speak to their own institution regarding credit recognition. We will also include a cover letter explaining that BISS content meets quality standards equal to 10 credits, with learning outcomes, study hours, and other key details to help with credit recognition discussions at your home institution.
How can I transfer my credits?
BISS programmes do not provide University of Birmingham academic credit. Please check with your home institution regarding credit recognition.

Will I receive an official transcript for BISS?
Students who have successfully completed the BISS programme will receive an official academic transcript by the November following the Summer School period.
When will I receive the transcript?
An official transcript will be sent out to students between October and November following the Summer programme. We will also include a cover letter explaining that BISS content meets quality standards equal to 10 credits, with learning outcomes, study hours, and other key details to help with credit recognition discussions at your home institution.
What if my transcript has not arrived?
Students who have not received their academic transcript by the end of the November following the summer school period are advised to request a copy by contacting the BISS team.

Which visa should I apply for?
You may require a visa to study in the UK for the Birmingham International Summer School - if you do, you may need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

How do I apply for my visa?
The University admissions office will provide you with a letter to use for your visa application once the conditions of your offer have been completed.

Will accommodation and catering be provided?
Self-catered accommodation is included in the BISS fee; students do not need to apply for this separately. All students will be provided with a single-occupancy room with en-suite facilities. You will have access to a shared living area and kitchen, fully equipped for cooking.
When should I arrive in the UK?
The allocated arrival day for BISS students is Sunday, 19th July 2026. Information will be sent out to all students with further instructions.
Will an airport pickup be provided?
Getting to the University of Birmingham campus from Birmingham Airport by taxi or train is very quick and easy and Birmingham coach station, in the city centre, is a short taxi ride to the campus accommodation. If you're arriving at any other UK airport, you may be able to get a free National Express coach voucher to travel to Birmingham coach station. When your BISS place is confirmed we will send out information on how to check if you are eligible for voucher and how to book your place.
