Alderman Newton's Education Foundation is a Leicester-based charity offering financial support to individuals to help access education and training opportunities. This can include course fees, accommodation costs, travel, materials and equipment, educational trips and visits, and any other costs directly associated with your course of study.

There is no limit on the amount that can be applied for, but most grants are under £5,000.

You can only receive one grant per academic year. If you have already a received a grant from the Foundation, then you can apply again in future academic year; but please note that there is no guarantee of further funding.

Who can apply?

To apply for a grant from this scheme you must be:

  • Under the age of 25 years;
  • Able to demonstrate that you are in need of financial assistance;
  • Either you or one of your parents must have been resident in the Diocese of Leicester for at least two years (proof of residency may be required). The Diocese includes the City of Leicester and most of the County of Leicestershire. If you are not sure whether you or your parents are resident in the Diocese, please call 0116 222 2200 for advice.

You are not eligible for this scheme if you are:

  • Resident in Leicester/Leicestershire only for the purposes of study (i.e. with a main/parental home elsewhere);
  • Classed as an overseas student by the educational establishment you are attending (with the exception of refugees/asylum seekers who have leave to remain in the UK, and who otherwise meet the residency criteria).

How to Apply

Please apply at least 3 months in advance of your course or activity start date, if possible, but not more than 6 months before the start of your course/activity. The Foundation cannot meet retrospective costs, i.e. things you have already paid for.

Application forms and guidance notes can be downloaded from the Alderman Newton's Education Foundation website.

Students can make one application per academic year.
