Darwin Trust of Edinburgh PhD Studentships in Microbiology

Full tuition fee at the international student rate (3 years) and stipend at UKRI rate for 4 years

Who can apply?

The Darwin Trust of Edinburgh funds a number of Scholarships each year to study for a PhD in Microbiology in the Biosciences Graduate Research School, with supervisors who are part of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection at The University of Birmingham, U.K. Scholarships are available to graduates from non-UK countries from October each year and cover full tuition fees for 3 years and a maintenance grant for 4 years.

This studentship it open to all non-UK applicants, with the following restrictions

• Students must be of the highest calibre and normally hold a First or Upper Second-Class honours degree or its equivalent.
• A studentship may not be held by a student who is already a graduate of the University of Birmingham. A studentship may not be awarded to an applicant who is eligible for the home/UK tuition fee.
• Applicants will normally have obtained either their first (Bachelors) degree, or their first Masters degree, no more than five years prior to the closing date for applications to the Trust.
• A studentship will only be awarded to an individual who has been accepted as a postgraduate student by the University of Birmingham. A student who has already started a PhD at the University of Birmingham, no matter how this has been funded, may not be awarded a Darwin Trust studentship.

How to Apply

Send your CV and a covering letter to a supervisor in the School of Biosciences or Institute of Microbiology and Infection with whom you would like to work, explaining that you would like to apply for a Darwin studentship. They will review your application and may then ask your referees for a letter of recommendation. If they rank you highly, they will ask you to complete a University PhD application through the application portal.

You will need to indicate on this form that you wish to be considered for a Darwin scholarship. Supervisors then rank candidates applying to them, and normally just the top-ranked candidates are interviewed online by the UoB Darwin Trust recruitment panel in February, and candidates ranked.
