Our Excellence for Energy scholarships are designed to prepare you for a future tackling some of the world’s biggest energy and environmental challenges.
Worth up to £10,000, these scholarships are open to talented postgraduate students from nominated countries in Southeast Asia.
The scholarships will be awarded based on academic merit to high performing students joining one of our two Energy postgraduate programmes in September 2026:
Who can apply?
In order to be eligible to apply for the scholarships, you must:
- Be classed as domiciled in (living in) Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, or Vietnam.
- Hold and accept an offer by 24th July 2026 from University of Birmingham to start in September 2026 for one of the following courses at Birmingham's UK campus;
- Be classed by the University as an overseas fee payer for tuition fee purposes and be able to pay the outstanding tuition fees not covered by the scholarship.
- Expect to at least meet the entry requirements for the programme, applicable to your country of domicile by 24th July 2026
- Have sufficient funds to cover the full cost of living at the University of Birmingham, plus any visa/travel expenses associated with studying in the UK.
- Following enrolment in September 2026, you will be required to pay your net tuition fees for the first year by 1 November 2026
Eligible Domiciles:
Students applying to this scholarship must be domiciled (live) in one of the following countries:
Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand or Vietnam.

All Postgraduate Excellence for Energy Scholarship offers are bound by the below terms and conditions which you should familiarise yourself with.
If your application is successful, all offers are based upon the terms and conditions of the scholarship and further eligibility checks will be undertaken. All offers are made upon the assumption that any and all information submitted is truthful and accurate; the scholarship can and will be revoked if applicants are found to be in violation of the scholarship's terms and conditions at any point.
1. Eligibility
The Postgraduate Excellence for Energy Scholarship will be available to the top achieving students, based on academic merit, who meet all the following criteria:
- Be classed as domiciled in and living in; Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, or Vietnam.
- International fee eligibility: Only students who are classified as eligible for international tuition fee payments will be offered the scholarship.
- Studying one of the two nominated full-time postgraduate taught degrees full-time on the Birmingham, UK campus in the 2026/27 academic year.
- Have received and accepted an unconditional offer and accepted your place by 24th July 2026: Only applicants who have received and accepted their unconditional offer by the deadline will be eligible for the scholarship; this includes paying the required deposit and meeting all academic offer conditions by the deadline.
- Self-funding: Only students who are self-funding their studies will be eligible for the scholarship. This scholarship can be held in conjunction with other University-owned partial scholarships, however, it cannot be held in conjunction with other discount scholarships offered by the University of Birmingham. Students who are receiving full or partial scholarships or sponsorship from a third-party organisation are ineligible.
Applications to an eligible Masters course must be submitted before the deadline; late applications will not be considered.
If the scholarship has already been awarded and/or is noted on your CAS, the University reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship if it later becomes aware of information that makes the student ineligible.
2. Payment
The scholarship amount will be confirmed to successful applicants. It will be paid as a discount on your tuition fee, and no part of the award can be made as a cash payment.
Only once the awardee has completed Online Registration and is classified as 'Normally Registered' will the discount be applied. Online Registration should be completed by 3rd October 2026 (23:59 UK time/GMT+1).
The Postgraduate Excellence for Energy Scholarship is tenable for 12 months at the University of Birmingham and cannot be deferred.
3. Termination
In any of the circumstances set out below the Excellence for Energy Scholarship will be withdrawn and you will receive no (or no further) payments from the University:
- If you permanently leave the University due to illness (whether or not following a Leave of Absence under the University’s Code of Practice on Leave of Absence procedures);
- If you leave the University voluntarily for reasons other than illness;
- If you are required to withdraw from the University due to disciplinary or fitness to practise proceedings;
- If you fail to complete satisfactorily the requirements of your programme;
- If you void any of the eligibility criteria of the scholarship.
The University reserves the right to demand the repayment of any instalment or instalments (or part thereof) of the Excellence for Energy Scholarship paid to you in circumstances 2 or 3 set out above.
4. Leave of Absence
In the event that you take, or are required to take, a Leave of Absence during the academic year any Excellence for Energy Scholarship payments still due will be suspended until you return from your Leave of Absence and re-register as a normally registered student with the University.
Upon re-registering you will be paid the balance of any instalments due from the academic year when the Leave of Absence was taken.
If you fail to return to the University after a Leave of Absence then the Excellence for Energy Scholarship will be terminated and you will receive no (or no further) payments from the University, as outlined above.
