Performance Sport Scholarship

The Performance Sport Scholarship supports talented student-athletes who have the potential to make a significant impact within our flagship and performance sports while studying at the University of Birmingham.

The scholarship is aimed at athletes who can demonstrate the potential to win BUCS medals or score points at BUCS Championship events in a BUCS scoring sport, as well as those who can contribute significantly to the success of our University first teams and squads.

Particular consideration is given to athletes competing within our flagship and performance sports, including Athletics, Badminton, Hockey, Men's Rugby Union, Netball, Squash and Swimming.

The scholarship is available exclusively to incoming undergraduate and postgraduate students and provides a cash award of up to £2,000, alongside access to specialist performance support.

Eligible incoming undergraduate recipients may also receive a one-grade reduction in the academic conditions of their offer to study at the University of Birmingham.

Who can apply?

Applicants must be UK-domiciled student-athletes and demonstrate the sporting ability and potential to make a significant contribution to performance sport at the University of Birmingham.

Applicants may be competing at junior international level, within professional club academies, national leagues, or at national or international championship level.

Consideration will also be given to athletes who demonstrate the potential to win BUCS medals or score points at BUCS Championship events in a BUCS scoring sport, or make a significant contribution to a University first team or squad.

Particular consideration is given to our flagship and performance sports, including Athletics, Badminton, Hockey, Men's Rugby Union, Netball, Squash and Swimming.

Applicants must be incoming undergraduate or postgraduate students and have applied for an eligible programme at the University of Birmingham.

Meeting the criteria for consideration does not guarantee a Performance Sport Scholarship.

How to Apply

To be considered for a Performance Sport Scholarship, you must complete both of the following by the scholarship application deadline:

Apply for your University of Birmingham programme. You must have submitted an application for your intended undergraduate or postgraduate programme at the University of Birmingham.
Complete the Sport Scholarship application form. Applications open on 1 October 2026 and must be submitted by Wednesday 20 January 2027.

You will need your UCAS ID or University of Birmingham application ID when completing your Sport Scholarship application. Please ensure you enter the correct ID, as an incorrect or missing number may delay your application.

You will also be asked to provide information about your sporting achievements and the contact details of a coach or representative who can support your application.

Decisions will be communicated by 31 March 2027.
