The School of Engineering BP Hughes Bursary is designed to support students who may be facing financial barriers, with particular priority given to those experiencing unexpected changes in circumstances. In the case of conference travel, support can be provided only if no other funds are available and if the student would otherwise not be able to attend a conference in their degree. Determination of eligibility will be made at the discretion of the committee.

Applications from students looking for funding to take part in activities that enhance or enrich their study of engineering but cannot take part due to financial reasons are particularly encouraged.

The Bursary cannot provide assistance with general living costs.

Who can apply?

This Bursary is intended to assist students who demonstrate financial need to meet one-off costs such as, but not restricted to:

  • Specialist equipment, repairs to equipment
  • Purchasing course materials
  • Travel associated with a project
  • Conference costs
  • Work experience or internship costs
  • Car costs e.g. repairs, breakdown or replacement travel arrangements
  • Unexpected loss of income
  • Increased caring responsibilities

This list is not exhaustive and claims for other one-off expenses will be considered at the discretion of the selection panel.

Which countries and nationalities are eligible?

Open to anybody from any country and any nationality.
